1. Progress: moving forward; having sucess
2. The progressive era was in the 1890s to 1920s because this was was a time of widespread social activism and political reform as wikapedia said.
3. Issues:
-the city grew
-tons of people started working
-large companies had advantages over small companies
-poverty
-rise of crime
-drugs and alcohol
achievements:
-women could vote
-child labor laws
4. All of the reforms were to better the world and they thought that they would all create change.
5.
Essential goals worth striving for/ Necessary changes- votes for women
Good Goals – not strictly necessary but could really improve life- prohibition
Strange Goal-minimum wage laws
Not a good idea- improving housing conditions

The future
1. Predictions made 100 years ago include many things such as digital color photography, mobile phones, pre-prepared meals, television, police with xray, flying machines, moveable houses, moving sidewalks, and many other things. There are also many medical and science predictions such as cancer being cured and life being found on mars.
2. Most of the predictions were a wish rather than a warning. They hoped for many social and personal things such as tv, cell phones, waterwalk, moveable sidewalks. They were all wants and things that would make life easier rather than a necessity. All of the predictions made at the time were probably with an intent to better our country and many of them were but it could be argued that the technological achievements such as cell phones and tv has not been a good thing because it has corrupted our society and made it lazy.
3. Predictions that came true were the tv, cell phones, digital color photography, preprepared meals, and tanks. Predictions that are still out of reach are some flying machines, waterwalk, ship railway, and good weather machines. The predictions that did not come true seem reachable within the next few years, they are things I have hears people talk about. Its crazy to think that people predicted life would be found on another planet and sure enough recently there has been talk about water being found on mars.
4. People definitely seem to be anticipating a better world. When people make predictions they are making them believing that anything is possible and can be created. It seems that people are making "wishes" to make life easier and more enjoyable.
5. If I were to predict a future world my wish list would consist of traveling through time, robots, a permanent end to war, a cure for cancer, and many other things. At the rate the technological advances are going, it's hard to even imagine what we will have in the future because anything seems possible now...flying cars?? People are always talking about the negative impacts all of the new technology has, therefor, new technology may not be a good thing to wish for in the future.
6. As individuals we do not have very much control over the future it seems like. It takes larger groups with a lot of power to have control over the future and still then it seems like they don't have all of the control. I feel like the government has the most control over the future. Every time we have seen a drastic change in our world it is usually something that the government has done. The people that have the most knowledge, money, and power are in control.

How do you analyze a political cartoon?
I knew that to analyze a cartoon you are supposed to observe everything that you see and then take a guess about what you think is happening. I learned that after you look at everything and say what is happening you are supposed to say what you wonder about in the cartoon.
I used the guide from loc.gov and it gives 3 steps:
1. OBSERVE: take note of what you see- all the words, details, possible symbols
2. REFLECT: say what is happening in the cartoon and what the author is trying to say about it and how did the author convey this
3.QUESTION: say what you wonder about the cartoon that you don't already know
Observe: I see people skipping and looking happy while holding American flags. I also see the hat in the middle says Cuba and that all three of the men look different. Reflection:This cartoon shows Cubans celebrating the 4th of July because the 4th of July in 1946 was when the Philippines got independence and July 4 for America was the adoption of the declaration of independence which is why they are holding American flags. To realize this I looked at the hat that said Cuba to know at least the ma in the middle is from Cuba and they were holding American flags. The caption at the bottom means that the Cubans are going to celebrate too because the Philippines and the US have something to celebrate on July 4th. The author is clearly showing happiness as they are skipping along and smiling and it is funny because the caption is "We're coming in on independence day celebrations, too." Question: I wonder when Cuba's independence day was, was it july 4?
When observing this cartoon, I notice that Uncle Sam is holding a fork labeled US that is crushing down on Hawaii and he is pushing other men away with his other hand. Then the bottom says, "You fellows will please stand back while I try these oyster sandwiches myself." When I am reflecting upon this cartoon, I know that the United States annexed Hawaii so that is what the fork labeled US crushing Hawaii means. I also relate the caption to Uncle Sam getting to "try" Hawaii like he said about the oyster sandwich as he pushes the others out of the way inferring that Hawaii is his. Finally as I question this cartoon, I wonder who the other men that Uncle Sam is pushing away are. What countries are they from?

I observe that this cartoon has a Cuban mother holding her son who looks ill or dead which is probably from the war. There is a vulture in the background which shows how bad the war is like a vulture. Reflection: When I first looked at this I saw the title "The Cuban Mother" which tells me that the lady in the cartoon is a mom so that means the man she is holding is probably her son. Since the mother has her hand over her face it means she is sad and her son looks sick or looks like he passed away. He passed away from the war. Then I saw the vulture in the back and I know that vultures are bad and have to do with dead things so it symbolizes how bad the war is and what it does to people. For the last step, question, I wonder what happened in the war to the son.

Eddie Aikau
The filmmakers call this film Hawaiian, The Legend of Eddie Aikau because the documentary was about Eddie who was a true legend from Hawaii. The topic was Eddie Aikau, the focus was the Hawaiian identity and surfing career of Eddie, and the angle was that Eddie worked hard to sustain Hawaiian culture and brought honor to his ancestors through his courageous actions and family/community. The assumptions that the filmmakers made about the audience was that we wanted to see something about sports and about an athlete, to show us that sports have more to them. The film would have been different if it had been made by PBS of the History channel because it would have focused more on the Hawaiian culture facts and more about the ship at the end of the documentary.

Phrenology
Today we did research to find out what the artifact was that Mrs. Lawson showed us. My job was to watch my group and notice what search terms they used and where they got their information from. They all started with googling the word phrenology because it was a new word to them. They found that phrenology meant mind and that the brain has different locations for different functions. Then they researched LN Fowler and began to find pictures of the head and more information about it. When researching, the best information came up when terms were combined such as Phrenology head, LN fowler, porcelain bust. It was found that there are real and fake models of these heads and they found pictures of the differences between them. Looking at images of what was being searched was a quick and easy way to get an idea of what it was and looked like. When researching, they found that the idea of the head was from another guy other than LN so then they searched that name which was a good way to find out more. The research started out broad and then it could be narrowed down after reading the results from the broad research and looking up specifics from those results.
